We have a little over a month to go before Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe flies onto the Switch. This is bound to be an exciting time for those of us who love Kirby and are a fan of the 2011 Wii game, but there will also be many out there who can't help but think, "wait, didn't we only just get a new Kirby game like yesterday?"
Generally, those who are having such thoughts are correct — obviously, we didn't actually get a new Kirby title yesterday, but we get the idea all the same. Just last year we got Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby's Dream Buffet (two very fun titles, we must admit), so to have another addition to the puffball pantheon so soon feels like, simply put, a lot.
Of course, 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the franchise so it makes sense that Nintendo would be going all out with its celebrations (even if it does sometimes forget those of its other series). The point remains, however, that there has been a huge amount of Kirby on Switch and its momentum shows no sign of slowing.
To discuss this very issue, the wonderful Alex and Felix from our video team sat down to discuss just what is going on with the series and attempt to clamp down on the source of this Kirby mania. The following video sees the pair break down the rich history of Kirby on Switch and look towards what the future may hold.

Kirby sucks. Fact
Well they need to ressurect the corpse of Dream Buffet with free DLC.
I'd also like Blowout Blast 2 and a port of Rainbow Curse.
I'd absolutely love a Kirby Game & Watch.
Not to sound too greedy, but we could use a new collection. I was kinda hoping RTDL would be paired with a few more titles like Nightmare in Dreamland, Amazing Mirror, and Squeak Squad giving us all of Kirby's mid-generational releases. Or possibly Triple Deluxe & Planet Robobot as a 3D all stars collection.
Nintendo has been so generous with Kirby (and Pokémon) this generation that it sort of feels like, “Hey, what happened to franchise x or franchise y?”
I’m really happy with the amount of Kirby we’ve gotten though. The pink puff has always deserved this kind of care and love. HAL Labs are mad geniuses
Before last year there wasn't much Kirby on Switch outside of old NSO games; seems like it's just making up for lost time. Keep it coming!
The little guy could get a little more, can’t say the same for donkey Kong right now, lmao my boy is getting robbed, can’t get robbed if you never had it lol.
@Type_Trubbish WOOSH!
I mean, there not wrong, what they said is fact.
Give me all the Kirbys. Pumped for the inevitable Forgotten Land sequel.
@Snatcher : Which is a little surprising, really, given what a wild success the Switch has been. To think that the Wii U of all consoles got a brand new Donkey Kong game, but the Switch didn't. But to be fair, the Switch didn't get a new Mario Kart game either (discounting the gimmicky Mario Kart Live).
Perhaps a Tropical Freeze sequel is in order, but set in springtime (continuing with the seasonal theme, perhaps?).
What's even more surprising is that we are yet to see a Mario vs. Donkey Kong game on Switch. They could have just ported the Wii U/3DS instalment and called it a day (and throw the Amiibo game in there for good measure), or perhaps add some more levels, call it a "Deluxe Edition" and audaciously charge US$60 for it.
There's no such thing as enough Kirby.
@larryisaman Ha! I first saw your comment as non constructive, but now i get it.......nice
I love Kirby and Kirby games, but I don't go near the digital-only releases, and I would like the balance between Kirby games and Yoshi games to be a bit more even. Yoshi is generally always the first character I gravitate to in a Nintendo game that has a roster of characters to choose from. I appreciate Kirby is a HAL creation and Yoshi isn't, but damn it just make it happen alright!?!
I wish they'd do a full HD remake of Epic Yarn.
Kirby is such an easily marketable character for merch and the like. Makes total sense to see him rise to become one of Nintendo’s tentpole properties. I feel he’s become the go to for the weird, experimental games Wario used to star in.
@Hoshiko That would be a dream (land) come true! 🤩
@ActionPanther Well, first we need an HD remake of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Then Epic Yarn HD can come after.
It's funny really. I remember first playing Smash 64 then chose Kirby when I started playing because of his design. Really love smash brothers. Didn't find out that the same guy that made Smash made Kirby until years later but got into both series regardless. He may not work on Kirby anymore but the Smash style is still implemented. Also, there are 12 Kirby games on the Switch? Sheesh!
@CloudyDaze Let's just get an HD collection
@ActionPanther Yeah, that sounds like a better idea.
@ActionPanther
that's a great shout.
HAL loves their puffy pink boy, don't they?
WE NEED MORE!!!
Get Good-Feel on one.
Then HAL.
Then Wayforward.
Sequels to Tilt NTumble, Block Ball, Piball & Mass Attack.
Lets give up on Mario for some time ALL KIRBY ALL THE TIME!!
Retro Studios? KIRBY!
KIRBYKIRBYKIRBYKIRBYKIRBY
Epic Yarn? REMASTER IT.
HD Collections of all the mainline games? DO IT DO IT!
The 3DS ones - well the good ones...SIWTCH REMASTERS!!!
ARHHHH JUST DO IT.
I forget if it was Peer Schneider or someone else from IGN, but they had the theory that Kirby is essentially the grim reaper for Nintendo consoles, and a surplus of his games is a sign that the end of the generation is nigh.
Honestly I don't think there's anything I really want from the franchise, HAL has done so much that the Kirby community is probably one of the last fanbases to complain about a lack of great titles 🐱. Just my two cents in this discussion.
All that I know is that Kirby can't stop winning 💪💪💪
I know Nintendo and Miyamoto have their vintage legacy in Mario, but they really should consider ushering in a Kirby & Sakurai era.
@Axecon
Id love to see nintendo lean into the collection angle especially with the 3ds and wiiu eshops closing meaning a large amount of their back catalogue will no longer be able to be purchased, in terms of kirby that also means losing out the best version of Kirbys adventure (not counting the remake), the 3d classics version of that was great, it got rid of the technical issues from the NES one like the lag which made the game play a whole lot better.
just hopefully without the whole "limited digital" gimmick that 3d all stars had.
@DiggleDog HAL could totally develop a new Wario land game for Nintendo, they must be saturated making all these Kirby games. They are really creative and full of unique ideas with the pink puffball, just like wario's games used to be. C'mon, It's been so long....
I'm actually surprised there was no "Game & Watch: Kirby's Dreamland" made last year.
@Anachronism you right, when a Nintendo hardware is at the end of it lifecycle, Nintendo usualy release one final Kirby game to end this console generation, meaning, we are at the end of the Switch era.
@DiggleDog Always has been, just look at all the various Kirby spin-offs.
Don't remember exactly where I've heard it, but they make those to experiment new ideas and avoid getting saturated making mainline Kirby games (which is why I doubt that's the case @waluigi86, although I'd be all for a new Wario Land game, made by HAL or someone else).
@Giancarlothomaz last year Nintendo said the switch was only halfway through its life cycle. Kirby doesn't mean anything. Especially with tears of the Kingdom coming
@Corvus96 Nintendo state Switch is in the half of it lifecycle since 2019.
Whats goning with kirby Right Now?: Hes stepping on the gas with his boosted speed and the turbo truck destroying eflis for 10 hours stright
By The Way: Love the games
