Teyon has today announced that it is knocking 40 percent off the price of critically acclaimed eShop steampunk shooter Steel Empire.
Originally released on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive back in the early '90s, this classic blaster was recently updated for the 3DS. We gave it a glowing 9/10 review, stating that the game combined "classic shoot-‘em-up action with an irresistible steampunk style" and was "an old-school delight".
Will this new lower price tempt you to pick up the game, assuming you haven't done so already? Let us know by posting a comment.

Not my cup of tea but for that price I think everyone interested should treat themselves for the holidays.
Oh, finally a reasonable price! Is this a temporary or permanent discount?
@Prof_Clayton Sorry, just had to post this.
Fiiiiiiinally, Steel Empire will be mine.
For 16 € in Europe this would be an insta-buy for me.
@sinalefa They said in their release that it is temporary:
"The sale starts tomorrow, December 11, in the American Nintendo eShop and the game will be offered for $15.99. Be quick to grab the bargain till January 15, 2015."
I may have to pick this up now. I was initially turned off by the $30 price tag but $16 sounds a lot better.
$30 is a deep price for the game, but with it cut in half, I recommend this gem to you guys, I had fun playing and reviewing it.
I'm still waiting for the inevitable 10$ price point. Call me cheap if you want but the original price was so off putting to the point of offensive.
I had a little trouble with the $30 price point for a remake of a Genesis game, but for $16, I think I can handle that.
@Spoony_Tech Digital Deluxe promotion? unless you don't have a Wii U and transfer the extra $5 to your 3DS.
Finally, a good price! I had given up hope on ever getting this game; $30 for a remake was just too high for me to justify with all the other great games that have been coming out. Now I can double down on my hopes of star fox 64 eventually going on sale as well.
@Undead_terror I do have the Wii U but not the 32 gig system so I don't qualify for it. I'm good though till that price eventually hit my price point. I've got plenty else to play. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Considering all the comments in Aug from people saying they would buy it at $15 this should sell now. Well except @Spoony_Tech who is sticking to his $10. (I agree, its a $10 20 year old port, tops.)
BTW - $29.99 minus 40% would make this $17.99, not $15.99. The company should have said 50% off and knocked it down to $14.99. The consumer psychology of getting it below $15 coupled w/ people seeing 50% - half off would have gotten them a few more sales. Maybe a lot more. Having an incorrect 40% off to $15.99 is weird.
@rjejr You know I thought the math was off but my brain doesn't function this early in the morning lol. Also did you remember I said that back then about the 10$ or are you just going off what I said here?
@Prof_Clayton
Thanks. Still a whole month sale is longer than most eShop sales.
@Spoony_Tech - No, I'm stalking you. jk (Though it kind of feels like it between here and Miiverse, I only have 3 friends on Miiverse and you're 1 of them, and the most prolific) I went back to read the review and was looking for my old comment. And I surprisingly didn't have 1. I must may been on summer vacation that week. $10 seems like a good original price for this though, $5 on sale.
I love shmups, but I honestly still think that's too expensive. I'll bite for under 10
@KryptoKrunch Same here. Getting this tomorrow since the discount is not up yet.
I have to agree with other commentors, at 15 its better, but 10 would be ideal. If you're not one for replay value, 15 will feel like a ripoff.
Ok, now I'll bite. This is what it should have been to begin with. I'm sure the 10 people that bought it at that $30 price tag weren't enough to cover development costs. They had to do something drastic. Like, ya know, charge accordingly.
I want but still a bit pricey for me.
That's more like it. This was their strategy all along, I'm sure. Milk the early adopters with that insane $30 price tag and then drop it down to the real price a few months later.
Finally! Glad I waited. I noticed only 3 people had ever rated it on the Canadian eShop, so it can't have been selling very well.
I still think it's too much for me. To me, the $15 range is for top notch indie games....Wasn't Wonderful 101 just $20 and that was a full retail game???
This game should be around that $7.99 price IMO.
Yes! Buying it tomorrow. I hope Teyon finally realize how the price will boost the sales (maybe a lot) and keep it at $15.99 from now on. Or they could do an Atlus and keep discount it like every moth
I feel it's a little unfair to write it off as a simple port when the visuals and sounds have all gone through a pretty significant overhaul. Anyways, it's a fantastic gem that anyone who enjoys arcade shootemups needs to play.
@dkxcalibur I bought Wonderful 101 at $59.99 and I don't regret that decision once.
@B3ND3R i got w101, rayman legends and then got cod free with target's buy two get one free last year.
Now I'm tempted but its still kind of insulting that its not being lowered to a permanent price. Just look at all that feedback the game has received. They seriously would rather let it sit there and Rot than sell the game.
FINALLY! I've been waiting forever for a sale on this! That's still a little high, but hey, it's better than $30!
Bad timing. I've got enough to play right now and this still isn't cheap.
still not the right price for the game... looking at 9.99 or better...
(my opinion)
nevertheless took the plunge..
Where is the European / Australian release of this game? It's been ~6 months since its North American release with zero word on if it's still even coming to the EU/AU eShops. Oh well, I'll just keep waiting & hoping.
I don't even know why, but I thought the Mega Drive version looked the best. :/
Fantastic. I wasn't even waiting for a sale, but I'm glad I waited at all.
If only EU got this. Looks awesome.
Welp I'll pick up a eshop card on friday.
