In a move poised to please Metroid fans and ruin bidding wars for some, Nintendo has graciously released the Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii U eShop. Spearheading the third week of the North American "Throwback Sale," the beloved trilogy is available for a whopping 50% off its regular price in celebration of its launch. Though Samus Aran is clearly the leading lady during this update, plenty of other Nintendo favorites have come along with her for the sale which lasts until February 5th.
Here are this week's deals:
- Metroid Prime Trilogy - $9.99 (normally $19.99)
- Metroid - $3.49 (normally $4.99)
- Super Mario Kart - $5.99 (normally $7.99)
- Mario Kart 8 - $44.99 (normally $59.99)

Not really. Outside of Trilogy, l already have the Wii U games.
Only 3DS non retail game I don't have on that list is Mario Golf. Not really interested in it, so doubt I'll buy it.
Gotta love the made up prices in Canada. 10.99 for MPT and 26 for Mario Golf World Tour. No consistency at all, just made up price increases...
Trilogy for me.
"Though Samus Aran is clearly the leading lady during this update", I thought Pink Gold Peach was!
I'll pick up Mario Golf for the Virtual Console. It'll go nice with World Tour.
Hey Ron, is the Metroid sale for Wii U or 3DS?
@Jahir I'm obviously not Ron, but just a heads up — it's for 3DS.
@HylianJowi Thanks! I guess I'll pass then
Downloading Trilogy now, I reeeally love the series. Still hope Nintendo releases a new, original Metroid title for the Wii U! 2016, maybe?
Mario Golf: World Tour aside (not interested), I have all of those as a disc or cartridge already. I'll pass for this week.
lol! Nice 'sale' Nintendo!
Last week I bought Guacamelee for $2.99 on my Vita (regularily $14) and Nintendo knocks $1 off the 25 year old NES game, Metroid, and thinks that's a deal?
I have the Trilogy sitting on my shelf next to my Wii U, and yet the eshop version is still tempting for some reason...
@MasterBlaster
Guacamelee Super Turbo Edition was on sale on the Wii U for $6 just last week. This week you can get the Metroid Prime Trilogy for $10. That's $3.33 per game. And don't forget Nintendo's $0.30 Super Metroid deal from a while back. I've yet to see Sony beat that.
@Ron_DelVillano Please check the Wii U eshop. I just noticed that MK8 doesn't have a sale tag associated with its new price on the eshop. Could it mean a price-reduction or a simple error on Nintendo's part?
Great opportunity for me to scoop up the Prime Trilogy
Already have them all.
@Samurairu
Heh? $10.99 Canadian is less than $9 USD.
http://currency.wiki/10-99cad-usd
Hey, how about some GamePad compatible Wii games for EU, already.
@Haz,
How dare you put our Canadian complaints into perspective?
Nintendo is the only company that can get me to repeatedly buy things I already own. I'll be getting the Prime trilogy on eshop today.
They are the main company that gets me to repeat buy their stuff, but I'd happily buy tons of VC games from other companies besides them (or Capcom, Konami, Natsume) if they would put them on there. I have 150 VC games on my Wii VC that I would immediately pay the upgrade fee for as soon as they are released for Wii-U. I stopped buying games on Wii VC thinking that the games would show up on Wii-U. I may have to go ahead and get the others I want before the Wii eshop is eventually shut down.
I tried Prime back on there gamecube and just didnt like it much. I dont take to FPS's very well even if it is something as awesome as metroid. Im tempted to try it again though for such a killer value...
@Haz The problem is that my 9.99$ I earned in local currency from my job in Canada has less value than the 9.99$ in local currency one earns from his job in the United States, yet my salary didn't increase because the exchange rate went up (from a Canadian perspective). Since we are buying the same product, it should make sense that we pay the same price, in local currency, hence the complaints.
I understand that people on the other end (the seller) want to receive more money from the customers so they adjust prices for currencies evaluated below their main currency (usually USD). Still, it's a losing situation for Canadian customers.
This situation prevented me from buying a lot of things online in the recent months. In particular, a PS4, just after the price went up 50$ in early 2014. That and the fact that the PS4 didn't have any interesting games (for me at least) at that time.
</rant>
That being said, I'll still get the Canadian-price-inflated Metroid Prime Trilogy today!
I'd get trilogy if they remastered it in HD.
@Haz That's not the point. For the years the CAD dollar was at parity or well above the USD the price was never less in Canada. That's one point. The other point is why is one game 10% more, but the other one %16 more? Money is made up and when it's a digital commodity there is no reason for made up price differences or more accurately what I'm saying is price increases.
@Joalro Explain to me the random price increase differences? Why are some digital games the same price as before, some are more and the amount more is never consistent. It just proves that the exchange reason people assume is not accurate or the increases would be consistent. It's all made up and a simple money grab. This much here, this much there.... oh is this much here. It's idiotic imo.
It's not the current price based on an exchange rate with one foreign currency which irks me it's that the price increases are random amounts and that when our dollar was worth more than this one foreign currency we never paid less.
Last week the 3DS promos were the same for US and Canada for LoZ ALBW and Kid Icarius. I bought them both in anticipation of the N3DS. This week, Mario Golf WT is 16% more in Canada than the US. I'll pass. The inconsistency makes me feel scammed by Nintendo. BE CONSISTENT!!
World Tour is the only one I don't own for retail downloads. I may just get that maybe. MPT I'm getting no matter what though.
Well I had that trilogy for about a year without knowing how valuable it had become, I don't think it'll change anything for me to see the price drop. The more people playing the merrier
Curious about the prime trilogy but can u use gamepad/pro controllers or do you have the use motion controls?
@TheItalianBaptist It uses a Wii Remote plus nunchuck and it's not really motion controls (until you get to Prime 3) but aiming. It's a nice middle ground between slow/clunky analog stick and hyper accurate and fast mouse pointing. You don't have to hold your arm up in the air or anything. I just rest my wrist on my knee and enjoy super fluid movement and aiming. No "waggle".
@invictus4000 That was ages ago. Give it a try.
@rdrunner1178 total compete torture!! You would think by now NOA would quicken the pace to at least 2 vc titles a week!! Jeez!!!
My biggest challenge is finding wii points cards!! A tough search for sure!! Either way Nintendo continues to deny us titles like the DKC trilogy, namco museum, the turbo 16 titles that japan has and many others!! It's utterly ridiculous!!! What kills me the most is whenever Reggie or Iwata are interviewed they are never put to task to answer these questions about the state of the vc service!!
If I were conducting that interview it's all I would wanna talk about!! Sigh!
@Jahir
Same as you, I may have picked Metroid if it was on Wii U. When they discount either Metroid or Zelda 1, it is always the 3DS version so I always pass.
@DeQuimet Yes, $10 Canadian is less valuable than $10 USD. 1 Yen is also much less than 1 USD, but you wouldn't expect to buy something for 10 Yen which you would normally buy for 10 USD just because the numerical value is equivalent. Ignore the fact that Canada and the US both use "dollars", the only thing that matters is the exchange rate, which is based on the international purchasing power of the currency.
@Samurairu
If you have an issue with consistency, then that is fine, but if your issue is just that the US and Canadian prices are different, you do have to consider the exchange rate. The price of digital items is based on what the seller perceives the market is willing to pay for the item. Also, the Candian price for Mario Golf ($26 as you mentioned) is still lower than the US price of $22.49.

In both cases, the Canadian price is better than the US one.
I'll be downloading Trilogy, of course, but I don't see myself getting anything else in this sale.
I done own both super mario kart, and Mario Kart 8, and I will be picking up metroid prime trilogy today. As for the rest of the games I don't own a 3ds console.
@Samurairu I would agree with an idea used within the PC market which sets a cap on pricing: "one world, one price." Basically, it entails setting a base price from a prevailing market (usually meaning the American Dollar, the Euro, or the Japanese Yen), then capping the conversion value from other currencies so that the price elsewhere matches the value in the prevailing market. Then, the price can be adjusted downwards from there, if the economic situation of a country or area is poor enough to warrant a price drop, in fairness.
For example, the Wii U Basic Set debuted in Mexico for 6,000 pesos (about $412 US dollars) and the Wii U Deluxe Set for 7,200 pesos (about $494 US dollars). If we had applied "one world, one price," then the price of the Wii U Basic Set would have droppped to about 4,370 pesos (about $300 US dollars) and the price of the Wii U Deluxe Set would have dropped to about 5,098 pesos (about $350 US dollars). Then, since the economic situation of Mexico is not good right now, the price could then be adjusted downwards to cap at about 4,300 pesos for the Wii U Basic Set, and about 5,000 pesos for the Wii U Deluxe Set. (It could be capped lower, but calculating the algorithm needed to decide what would be a fair amount would be even more complicated. Not to mention, any number of issues could arise from the fear big industries have of importing from neighboring regions.)
In any case where "one world, one price" cannot be met for any local market reasons, the company (Nintendo in this case) would provide a rebate to new console sales if the customer provides a valid proof of purchase, either through mail or an online code verifier, so that the customer's paid amount would match that of customers elsewhere in the world. Yes, this system would be complicated and marred with mishaps, but it would be an act of fairness, not a charity act.
Having only ever played the first Metroid Prime on GameCube, I may have to pickup the Trilogy for $10...especially since they feature superior wiimote controls. My biggest issue with FPS games on consoles is that two sticks do not have nearly the control that a mouse and keyboard setup do. I think aiming with the wiimote is about the best you can hope for on a TV
@Haz Oh, you're so right! I never bring that concept up because I haven't had anyone on the internet get it before. The concept of exchange rate is to be a consideration, but prices are set based on what the seller believes the market will bear. I think that's so right. Well put.
Whether the price is less than the US counterpart or not is of no concern, because my salary is the same, but it was frustrating that my buying power never went up on these products when Canadian dollar was high, but it's plummeting down now with no end in sight.
@BensonUii never seen that before... Awesome! I guess Samus can actually do anything
Ooh, Mario Golf! I'll be sure to grab that.
@Samurairu
I can see how that would be frustrating. I think that in the US we take for granted that many products are priced off of the USD, and thus those prices are expected fluctuate along with our own economy, just as our wages and salaries do.
Anybody do not have mario kart 8 yet to enjoy this discounts?
I won't be downloading Metroid Prime Trilogy, but I will be waiting for further price drops on the physical copy... I've wanted a new physical copy for $60 or less ever since I foolishly passed up a new copy sitting on a Gamestop shelf years ago, due to not wanting to spend too much on gaming. I believed I would see one again someday... That day will probably never come, but I'll keep looking. A used copy for $30 would also suffice.
@Haz I'm not completely delusional, it's understanding the US is treated the way it is, because it is the biggest consumer economy in the world and 10x bigger than Canada. It's just annoying how Canadians don't demand better than they get, that's all. Thank you for being understanding.
Downloading MP Trilogy as we speak. Too good a deal to pass up. Want a new prime style Metroid title on Wii u? Now you can prove it.
@Samurairu
Shhh Don't talk about that, we actually pay cheaper than the Americans for video games overall because of how crappy our dollar is thanks to Harper making our dollar ride on oil.
The Metriod and Super Mario Kart.
@ikki5 = (
I've already got the Wii VC version of Metroid. Is the price to upgrade to the Wii U version also discounted this week?
@ikki5 To be fair, the American dollar only holds the value it does today because of the Petrodollar as well, due to our government also mishandling public funds. Without that, the USA would almost immediately be supplanted by one economic union or another as the global economic standard. It's only a matter of time until that day comes. (Probably within the first half of this century.)
Noa is a joke compared to it's japan and Europe counterparts.Reggie is nothing more than a corporate mouth peace that probably isn't much of a gamer. Industry leaders seem to lack relevant experience here in the good old USA .
@Samurairu it is called exchange rates - the Canadian dollar is worth about 85 cents in American dollars - so yeah - not made up numbers at all
@BulbasaurusRex Nope. Wow.
@vitalemrecords if you were right, the price difference would be consistent and would have reflected cheaper prices when the Canadian dollar was worth more than the USD. You need to put more thought into your condescending response.
@aaronsullivan
Man...I really, really should. I keep reading/seeing things about it and I'm like, "Ok, yeah I don't need to get this" and then people talk and I hear other things (like your simple comment) and I'm like, "Yeah, that's true! I should just get it and try it again". Haha. I'm so conflicted!
But now I'm thinking I will because even though I wasn't a big fan back in the day and I don't really like first person shooters too much, (A) It's freakin' Metroid, and (B) Even if I don't really take to it again...it's only 10 bones for 3 classic games...hmmm...
... and it crashes.
Has anyone found an answer for this problem?
@Samurairu Totally. I swear they don't even calculate taxes. Just kick on either one or five bucks to the price of whatever and you're set.
