Earlier today Flipnote Studio 3D became available to Club Nintendo members in North America, which is excellent news after numerous delays to the app. Once a code is retrieved lucky fans can finally produce some 3D animations, albeit without all of the sharing bells and whistles available in Japan.
Amusingly, however, not all that have received the app are simply downloading it onto their 3DS. Oh yes, there's money to be made, and it's taken no time at all for some to list their codes on eBay. We're not seeing a rush of items as we have in the past with limited edition hardware or prized demos such as the early Club Nintendo run for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, but there's a decent range for those in the US that want to buy them.
Priced between $5 and $25(!), these are unsurprisingly struggling to gain traction, with bids not exactly flooding in - the sellers are trying to prompt interest, putting words like 'exclusive' and 'rare' in the listings. The trouble is these codes are neither, not in any real sense - we suspect that 99% of those that care about an app like Flipnote Studio 3D are Club Nintendo members, and most likely have been for some time.
It seems there's nothing some won't try and sell on eBay, but we don't expect this to lead to much of a gold rush.
Thanks to Steve for the heads up.

Some people are disgusting...
The fack?!!!?!?!?
Why am i not surprised?
This is just...sad. That someone would try to gain a profit on what everyone technically can get for free if they sign up. :/ However, this is exactly why it should have just went straight to the eshop.
Scumbags one and all
I planned on posting mine onto here, but I've been unable to log into the site to claim it. I do not have a 3DS, nor do I expect to buy one anytime soon. I figured someone on here could put it to use.
Isn't it against ebay policies to sell codes on the site?
I wouldn't exactly call this "rare" or "exclusive" either, then again I would never even contemplate selling on something which people can get for free if they look in the right place.
It could also be against ebay's policy because it is misleading buyers technically.
I mean, if you really want Flipnote, can't you STILL sign up for Club Nintendo and then get a code? And without sharing capabilities, this isn't exactly a must have item.
I should try this. i got multiple codes now because I created multiple Club Nintendo accounts to account for the fact that i have so many 3DS's. lol
Some people are simply despicable.
I hope the next reward system Nintendo implements will download directly to your console, without giving any code. That way, it would be really hard to resell this kind of things, wouldn't it?
Hahaha! Well good luck xD
@Olmectron @Chisel @nostalgianinja So, why does this make them despicable/disgusting/etc people? It's pretty hard to gauge a person's character based on a single action, regardless of whether you agree with it or not. That's very judgmental.
I'm not surprised
Can't people just create an account? Honestly, this is terrible. I've had Flipnote in the past and without the proper internet sharing capabilities, like Flipnote Hatena, it's slightly lackluster. People can be disgusting.
Thomas-san is really not a fan of eBay apparently.
I don't even care about Flipnote 3D, but I wouldn't even consider selling the code.
Can't you just make an account on Club Nintendo and get a free code? You can even make several accounts on Club Nintendo to get several codes.
sighs As if the Smash demo codes being sold weren't bad enough.
I'm more curious in finding out how much people (and if allowed, who) will actually buy this.
After seeing people who spend more than $10 on the Smash bros demo and Hyrule Warriors store exclusive dlc costumes (which sells for $0.99 in the eshop now if they were patient), I wouldn't be surprise if some people get it sold.
And to think, I give most of my codes away on Twitter and Instagram.
There was already a scalper a few days ago, before they even came out.
lmfao
@Olmectron "Hey guys I have a 4DS with the Kingdom Nintendo, Super Smash Bros 5 demo on my 4DS!, I'm selling for just $1000!"
@Flopsy86 I don't think codes are forbidden on ebay. I have bought codes for Steam, PSN and Nintendo eshop for super low prices. There are also iTunes, android etc.
Oh wow that's an all time low
@ZurrrrBlattTron Well. Of course that will happen. That happens today with limited console models. It's not the same, but it happens.
Anyway, while that wouldn't be a full break for scalpers, it would be for some, not every scalper (of course some of them can) can get dozens of 3DS systems for reselling them.
And are the kind souls selling club nintendo game pins also scum?? They are offering a valuable service if you ask me
I hope this has nothing to do with why the webpage has been down all day.
Why would anyone do that? Never mind the moral question of is it right to make money off goodwill, they shouldn't do that because Nintendo never stopped desperately needing to be in control. And the moment they decide to do something nice, people jump up and try to sell it for an easy buck? This is why we can't have nice things.
If they're going to sell these codes, shouldn't they wait until April? You can make a Club Nintendo account before the end of March, so it doesn't make sense to sell something that's technically available to everyone at the moment.
Well, pretty much anyone can get Flipnote right now. But after Match 30th, that's when creating a Club Nintendo account ends. That will make Flipnote codes be rare. Sellers will have until June 30th because that's the day when all Club Nintendo codes will expire, which includes Mewtwo DLC codes, games, Platinum/Gold games, and few other codes from Club Nintendo.
Why report on this? Whhhhyyyy
Why buy one when I can just get my code from Club Nintendo? Oh yeah, the site's down.
I thought they were giving out the codes via email.
@PokeMario I just saw that. Well, it had a good run for about 4 days or so
I love how misinformed Nintendolife and its users are. Right now, at this very moment, attempting to get a Flipnote Studio 3D code through Club Nintendo results in a maintenance page. This has been going on for weeks. Those with codes actually do have an exlusive marketable product because they can not be obtained normally. If you think its unacceptable to sell an in demand game that can't even be obtained at the moment, then you're more incompetent than the people at Nintendo who are in charge of distributing it.
Would anyone like a free Club Nintendo code? It doesn't seem to work for me since I have "Already registered this system". Just let me know!
"It seems there's nothing some won't try and sell on eBay, but we don't expect this to lead to much of a gold rush." Should be, "try to sell" instead of "try and sell".
Er...anything for...money?
@NintendoMaster
Thomas-san could care less what you think
Facepalm
To those selling-GO GET YOURSELVES A JOB, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK.
To those that bought it-Flipnote will most likely end up on the EShop after Club Nintendo ends, so you should have been patient with it and waited…
This reminds me of the Smash Bros 3DS demo. People sold it for a lot of money, but then those that bought it, felt like complete idiots when the Demo ended up on the EShop 2 Weeks later…
Thanks for the idea. I listed mine on eBay for $5. I don't have a 3DS so I have no use for it. Nintendo should have offered a choice between a WiiU gift or a 3DS gift for those that don't have both systems.
Do you really think I'm trying to get rich by selling this code for $5? Do you really think $5 is going to make the world of difference to me? You self-righteousness type make me sick. Its not like I'm hording the supply and preventing you from enjoying it.
When are club Nintendo Europe members getting theirs
@warvad you can go on clubnintendo.com.all you have too do is bypass the maintenance screen.just type https://club.nintendo.com/account.do and sign in
I think scalping awareness deserves a feature on Nintendo Life. It just annoys me to no end!
@Mataluigi
i'll take it if no one else wants it
Just keep trying club Nintendo. I got the maintenance page the first couple times but then it finally worked, at long last! At least it is finally here people!
I can't get the flipnotes from my DSi library. Do I need a DSi with flip note studios to do that? If so, I'm very annoyed. I tried putting in my id and password, but it says it's incorrect. I tried just searching my id, and it couldn't find anything.
Has anyone transferred their old flip notes to the 3DS?
I tried to get my code, but it redirected me to the reward page
I knew tis would happen.
(Remembers SSB4 code fiasco)
Here we go again...
For 5 dollars? Is it even worth selling it for 5 dollars?
@SEMevs You have to go on the Hatena website at http://en.flipnote.hatena.com/ first, log in with your information, and it actually gives you the proper username (jumbly assortment of letters and numbers) and password (no more than 6 characters) that you put into Flipnote Studio 3D, which allows you to log in on your 3DS and retrieve your notes from the Hatena site.
On topic, there's rather little to say, other than "haha, that's funny that someone is trying to do that."
@warvad the site is down for maintenance less than ten hours a day, so no, nothing you said was true. Nice try though!
@Gamecube-3DS-360 2am to 8am my time has never been an issue logging on.
With a bit of persistance, I've been able to get on the main page of Club Nintendo, but unfortunately I can't log in. Yikes, this is getting ridiculous.
Hey, at least Nintendo is going to revamp things, right? They sure need to.
Update: Never mind... I was able to finally log in and get the code... and then things froze... goodness gracious... will I ever get it?!
@SurferClock Awesome, thanks
@Dauntless Thats disgusting man,a truly despicable act.The stuff of unemployed scumbags! How could you?
Joking man.Ye should have listed it for a $10
Nintendo Life, who cares what other people do with their codes? If people don't want their codes, they are allowed to do anything they want with it. 5 dollars is not going to make a difference. This site is like the Buzzfeed of everything Nintendo. Stop reporting on garbage like this. The quality of this site has decreased noticeably since last year.
Is it really that tough to get on Club Nintendo? I got in earlier today with no problem at all and downloaded Flipnote to my 3DS.
@Dauntless I thought that selling this was asinine, but you raise a pretty good perspective.
I have two codes somehow. I personally would sell it for 4 or 5 bucks if I wasn't planning to give it to a friend who doesn't use Club Nintendo.
At the same time I doubt anyone will buy this not because of the free availability but because there's no internet sharing. Not even QR Code sharing FFS.
Ugh I hate how some people misuse ebay and just try to rip people off.
@VIIIAxel I have friends in Sweden who don't have Club Nintendo but get the star Point in their retail games. You will bound to find people who can't get Club Nintendo getting these.
I wish I could get the program for free. I'm not gonna buy it from these people dou, no way.
I worry about some of you people calling people disgusting and despicable for selling something that belongs to them. Sad and pathetic viewpoints, seek help please.
I remember when the Smash Bros. 3DS demo first appeared.
Some people were so desperate to play some Smash they were willing to pay $50 or more (more than the full price) FOR A DEMO.
And that was like A WEEK before the full version.
I got on yesterday and got my two codes after a few failed attempts. I put it on both of our 3DS systems and tried it. For a free app, I really like it. My only gripe would be that I wish it had a larger color palette and of course online sharing.
I wouldn't buy a code for a free game but if others are willing to do so, it supports people selling them. The people that shell out the extra money for this and other things (Amiibos, game systems, games) support this practice. If no one bought the Villager Amiibo for 3 times the retail cost, then people would stop selling them on ebay for 3 times the cost.
It took me a while yesterday, but I was finally able to create two additional Club Nintendo accounts and get codes for all three Nintendo 3DS/2DS systems in our home. I suppose to some people time is money and not wanting to try and go through the hassle that is Club Nintendo during a heavy use period is worth money. A little sad that those selling would endorse it as being rare though. Club Nintendo was buggy enough before it became inundated with the extra users and those trying to use up all of their coins before July.
@dkxcalibur FlipNote Studio 3D is a good app, the non-3D app on the DSi is one that I have missed since selling my DSi XL years ago. But then again I did buy the better more versatile software, Colors! 3D. This software is fairly inexpensive and has a wide variety of tools and a large color palette. If you are wanting something more professional, I can highly recommend it.
@Nico07 Thanks for the recommendation. I may have to check that out. Can you share creations from Colors! 3D?
@dkxcalibur You can share and apparently colaborate on pictures with friends, something I never got around to. Here's the description from the eShop.
Based on modern painting techniques originally developed for professional drawing tablets, Colors! 3D is tailored for touch screen devices, and caters to everyone from serious artists to aimless doodlers. Whether you are looking to sketch, paint, or draw up your next plans for world domination, Colors! 3D is the perfect digital sketchbook.

i cant even get on the site to get the code its always down for maintenance. was able to log in 1 time and tried to get the code but then it went down for maintenance again
@KingMike haha, it's ridiculous isn't it? I actually had 2 people fighting over me to get my last SSBB demo code. Sold it for $5 to one of them and put it towards the actual full game... that I bought 7 days later.
Hello. Get it free by signing up at club Nintendo today Man what a bunch of busters! The things people do.
@Nico07 colors 3D is so cool. I had a lot of fun with it. I should fire up the app and start painting again
@Windy Yeah FlipNote Studio 3D is a great free app, but Colors! 3D is sooo much better.
This is as disgusting as those jerks who hoard all the Majora's Mask 3DS XLs and amiibos just to sell them on ebay for double the price.
@ThomasBW84
I thought I'd chime in and ask you if just having a CN account does the trick or if I need anything else to get this gem I've been waiting way too long for. As far as our good ol' Europe goes, anyway.
What people won't do just to earn a quick dollar smh...and I realized it mostly only ever happens to nintendo related things...never really see anything like this happen to xbox or playstation stuff.
Ebay should outlaw the use of the word "rare". It's misused so damn often.
@legendwaker The game WAS promised for free in summer. As glad as I am to have it, we need a proper excuse why it was held out of reach.
@AlexSora89 I don't believe it works in Europe. So sorry. For what it's worth, it's probably gonna come full fledged soon.
Just be nice about it. I love the app. I went on tumblr, found an artist who did Nintendo stuff and gave it to her. Just that easy.
Despite eBay's terms of service outlawing the selling of codes including those related to video games, people will continue to do it so long as there is someone buying it. I did it a few handful of times for games I really wanted but one left seller left me with a sour grape. Now I just troll around eBay reporting listings about TOS violations as revenge :3
@Mataluigi If you still have it, I'd love it. I don't have much, but I have some rare pokemon on omega ruby if you want one! Thanks
