With another week underway we kick off with the European Nintendo Download Update details. This week has a lot to offer, with the 3DS benefiting from highly anticipated Virtual Console arrivals, a neat collection, a retail release, a particularly promising download-only arrival and more. There are also various options - including more Pokémon) on the Wii U to consider, so let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
6180 the moon (Turtle Cream, €3.99/ £3.59) - A platformer that'll see players take control of the moon on a journey to find the sun. It'll use two screens (TV and GamePad) for the playing field, requiring players to look between the two as the moon bounces high and low. We'll lasso the moon and then work on a review.
Inside My Radio (Seaven Studio, €14.99/ £12.99) - This one sounds intriguing on paper, as it's a rhythm music game in which you have the ability to compose music by remixing music into your own arrangements, with electro, disco and dub flavours included. We'll find our rhythm and bring you a review.
REPLAY: VHS is Not Dead (Neko Entertainment, €9.99/ £7.49) - The premise sounds intriguing, with this being a platformer in which you manipulate time and move up to five characters through stages all at once; there's an overriding theme of a film director filming and making 'cuts', too. We'll rewind and work on a review.
SMART Adventures Mission Math: Sabotage at the Space Station (Engine Software, €2.99/ £2.69) - This certainly sounds like an educational title, as you try to save a space station through solving mathematical puzzles. We'll wrap our heads around the challenge for a review.
Defense Dome (HullBreach Studios, €2.99/ £2.29) - A throwback to classic arcade-style shooters of the 1990s. Players target an onslaught of enemy missiles by using the Wii U GamePad as a zoomable, gyroscope-controlled scope, and launch countermeasures to defend the nation. It sounds fine in theory, but we were far from impressed in our Defense Dome review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Pokémon Ranger (Nintendo, €9.99/ £8.99) - A DS game that launched a sub series, this has you play as a Pokémon Ranger who uses wild Pokémon to help overcome various obstacles and protect the Fiore Region, and Pokémon within it, from the Go-Rock Squad. Temporary capture of these Pokémon is done by circling them on the DS's touch screen, or in this case the GamePad touch screen. We'll round 'em up for a review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Joe's Diner (Joindots, €7.19 / £5.39 until 10th March, normally €7.99 / £5.99)
SDK Paint (HullBreach Studios, €3.35 / £2.99 until 3rd March, normally €4.49 / £3.99)
Wii U eShop Demo
SDK Spriter (HullBreach Studios, free)
3DS eShop
Mega Man Legacy Collection (Capcom, €14.99/ £11.99) - Though the included games (Mega Man through to Mega Man 6) have previously arrived on the Virtual Console, the download-only release of this collection in Europe brings a cut price to make it rather tempting. In addition to six classic games there are Challenge stages, along with plenty of digital memorabilia and extras to enjoy. We gave this a hearty recommendation in our Mega Man Legacy Collection review. Available from 23rd February.
Sadame (Rising Star Games, €14.99/ £12.99) - Developed by Mebius, this action RPG has four character types with four different gameplay styles, and each levels up as you progress through the game. In typical RPG style it's possible to customize your character with new weapons and upgrades, while replay value comes from the fact that certain events are only accessible by certain characters. It sounds and looks intriguing, and we'll bring you a review soon.
Excave III: Tower of Destiny (Bergsala Lightweight, €7.99 / £7.19) - This series offers randomised dungeon crawling of the old-school variety, albeit with some modern features thrown in. This new entry boasts of online leaderboards in addition to special unlocks available if you have save data for its predecessor. We gave Excave II a solid recommendation and will jump into this new entry for a review.
Toy Defence (CIRCLE Entertainment, €3.99 / £3.19) - CIRCLE continues its prolific run of releases, in this case with a tower defence title in which you do battle with toys. We'll see whether this is fun play time or a war of attrition in our review.
3DS Virtual Console
Pokémon Red (Nintendo, €9.99/ £8.99) - The first generation Pokémon titles finally arrive as legitimate purchases on modern hardware, rather appropriately right in time for the 20th Anniversary of the series. Trading is possible in these fresh releases via local wireless, too. Our review is in the works. Available from 27th February.
Pokémon Blue (Nintendo, €9.99/ £8.99) - The other half of the first ever release which features its own unique Pokémon. Available from 27th February.
Pokémon Yellow (Nintendo, €9.99/ £8.99) - An enhanced re-release of Red & Blue, this game made a star out of Pikachu by giving it greater personality traits, making this one another intriguing option out of the three gen 1 arrivals. Available from 27th February.
3DS Retail Download
Bravely Second: End Layer (Nintendo/Square Enix, €40.49 / £35.99 until 10th March for those with the demo, normally €44.99 / £39.99) - Following the strong commercial performance of the first entry in this series, this sequel aims to take the building blocks of that original RPG and make improvements across the board. A variety of adjustments, lovely visuals and excellent writing help this one shine - you can get the full lowdown in our detailed Bravely Second: End Layer review. Available from 26th February)
3DS DLC
Bravely Second: End Layer: SP Drink (Nintendo/Square Enix, €0.50 / £0.50 for the first purchase, then €0.99 / £0.89)
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight: Thunder Queen's Legacy (NIS America, free until 3rd March, then €1.99/ £1.79)

As much as I'm loving Fates so far I'd be much happier to be getting Bravely Second this week.
Just hurry up with the n64 games, why does it take so long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And why can't we have the Pokemon gen1 remakes on GBA on the wii u vc???
Red, Blue and Yellow for me.
Nothing this week as I'm not into pokemon
Wow, Mega Man Legacy Collection is much cheaper than I'd expected. I guess since we're not getting a physical release of the game?
I've opted to import the US Special Edition though, since I really covet that gold Mega Man amiibo.
I have a gold Mario amiibo, so why not?
One day Fire Emblem Fates will be there and I will be happy (not that it matters much as I'll get the SE but at least it'll be there)
That aside, I'll definitely have to get the Mega Man Legacy Collection sometime. I'll most likely get Pokémon Yellow soon too but it's not high priority at the moment ( gotta save that Fates money)
@Webby-sama I haven't played the first one, so I can wait... Wanna swap? I'd rather have Fates now than be sat here waiting for a release date
@Mario-Man-Child yeah, I dint get it either, I have tried.
But to be fare, pretty great week for the eshop so I'll be getting a couple none pokemon games at least.
When the hell is fire embleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem
I really don't get all the excitement around the GB Pokémon games... I played a lot of Blue when it has been released, but in case I would get a newer game... Maybe I'm getting too old to understand this, or is it only nostalgia driven? Anyways, I would love to se a sequel or even a remake of Pokémon snap, the perfect WiiU gamepad game!
Not feeling the Wii U love... Was hoping for something Zelda like, but I think it's all out already?
@RupeeClock Yep, we get a bargain price but eShop-only. Personally, I'm happy with that!
That's one hell of a discount on Joe's Diner. Reading its eShop description just there, it sounds boring and its graphics aren't up to much.
One of the best weeks in a very, very long time!
There's a little something here for everybody to enjoy.
☺️
Man, Pokemon is sooo overpriced. I don't get Nintendo's pricing, all VC games should cost the same with each system having a set price point.
Mega Man Legacy Collection is actually a pretty good price and is very tempting, will have to see how it pans out with the technical specifics though (slow down, input lag etc). Already have 1, 2 and 3 but £11.99 is fairly tempting.
More Etrian DLC and pokemon for me.
I wish all weeks had as good downloads as this week. There's still room for improvement on Wii U's downloads though.
Well no love for Super Princess Peach or Sonic Advance... AGAIN!
I will be downloading Pokémon Yellow! It's going to feel like 90s, but you will be able to see the screen!
I usually like Rising Star games, I'll look into Sadame.
Ohh snap, Megaman Legacy Collection AND Pokémon RBY?
It's really all or nothing on the eShop, isn't it?!
£8.99 for a Gameboy title,are they having a laugh!
@OorWullie It's Nintendo, what did you expect? They've been overcharging on VC games for years and will continue to do so. I agree though, it is a joke but it's not funny.
@Peek-a-boo "Nothing for me this week"
After last week anything would have been an improvement. As a Wii U only owner I find that this week like most weeks is lame. It's good if you own a 3DS.
@Sligeach
Besides, Rayman taught me not to trust any diner owned by people named Joe.
Mega Man Collection and maybe Bravely Second for me this week.
As always I'll pick up the free Etrian DLC. I got Bravely Second pre-ordered, so that will take up my time this weekend. With these two games and everything in my backlog I've got more than enough to tide me over until... whenever NoE decides to release Fates.
@Ricube - I completely agree. The WiiU always looked tailor-made for a Pokemon Snap remake.
The Virtual Console is already over priced. The price of Pokemon RBY is taking the biscuit.
Bloo Kid 2 for me.
@Sligeach Even by Nintendo's standards this seems to be high.Gameboy titles are usually £5.49 if I'm not mistaken? What's so special about these that they cost an extra £3.50?
It says Yellow is an enhanced version of Red and Blue.If that's the case, why buy the original Red and Blue separately when you can have an enhanced version of both for the same price?
Pokemon and Mega Man. BS retail.
Yellow for me eventually.
@OorWullie gb games are like £2.59 to £3.59 roundabouts
Better than last week. But that's not saying much.
I don't remember the last time I bought something on Wii U eshop.
I don't understand why so much swing towards pokemon yellow... Pikachu following you around gets annoying and gets in your way, and the scratchy voice samples are quite grating. I would have gone for green if it was getting a Europe release but will wait for reviews and then do a coin flip between red/blue if the online trading system is robust.
@xVAKAR1ANx That's even worse then.Seems Pokemon fans are being fleeced.
Pokemon Red fans are getting revenge for the Splatfest results
Still no Super Mario Advance 1,2 and 4.
Meh, new stuff to look into it guess but unless reviews surprise me nothing for me. Good week for the 3ds though after some slow week's I suppose!?!
@Ricube I think the hype is purely nostalgia. I want to play Red, Blue/Yellow again but don't like the thought of having one bag that can only hold 20 items again. The Pokemon games have been refined so much over the years not sure I'd want to go back to the old ones again.
I've been wanting a Pokemon Snap on Wii U for ages now but I guess it's never going to happen
Bloo Kid 2 for me. I'd almost forgotten but now I'll get it cheap, yay.
Are the Pokemon GBC games coming to the South African eShop? I can't find them on there... and it's not listed under the "Coming Soon to 3DS eShop" section either. FYI, the South African eShop is usually a part of the European eShop.
Are the games listed on the European eShop anyway?
No info here on those new WiiU games, so I put up a trailer in the comments-section for each of them if anyone's interested. Just follow the link to the individual game's page.
Lots of interesting games, but I'm not getting anything this week. I refuse to get the Mega Man Legacy Collection since it doesn't come with the Gold Mega Man amiibo here. I'm also disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any Mew codes for the the Pokemon VC games, so I'm also avoiding them.
I enjoyed Pokemon Ranger. It's completely different to the main pokemon series, but enjoyable in its own right. I still have a DS cartridge, so I don't need to buy it again on VC.
I've got Bravely Default, but haven't got round to playing it yet. Maybe I'll get Bravely Second if I play the first one and end up enjoying it.
Can't wait to get Pokemon red. I haven't played the gen 1 games in nearly ten years as all my carts became lost in my parents attic or lost their battery saves.
Blue was my first and favourite but I'm going for red as I spent less time with it in the past. My wife is buying blue so I will have plenty of chance to trade for the blue exclusive Pokemon.
Im really beginning to think Nintendo feel the same way about the WiiU than Sony does about the PS Vita.
If it comes out in the US, I might be more likely to get Pokemon Ranger than Red, Blue, or Yellow
Meh, nothing for me this week. I'm a huge Pokemon fan and Pokemon Blue was my first video game ever. However, the 1st gen is just so outdated. No sprinting, just one tiny bag, no Pokemon abilities, no special split are just some of the feature I cannot live without. I'd much rather play Fire Red or Leave Green
Don't forget these Pokémon games are more than just a port with using 3ds connectivity to trade and battle.
@RadioShadow wow a fellow Super Princess Peach fan??! I LOVE that game.
The only fault it has is the cover makes it look like it's for kids but it's SO difficult
@MajinSoul I have got to agree with you. Plus no Pokemon Bank connectivity really kills it for me. I have too much of a backlog and too many pokemon to still catch to play through the originals again. As good as they may be, I just don't have the time.
@Vee_Flames The Pokémon games won't be on the eshop till the 27th ( aka this Saturday) since they wanted to drop them exactly on the 20th anniversary
@ASonic3582 Ah, I see. Thanks for telling me that. I was worried the games weren't going to be released on the S. African eShop.
@Toadsfriend I'm also a big fan of Super Princess Peach. It's such a charming game! I don't think it was that hard, though... The hardest parts are probably the boss fights where you really have to figure out how to bear them. And maybe also when you can't use your emotion abilities. That can place you in a pinch!
Interested in Replay:VHS as from what I've seen it's a clever puzzle game.
And SDK Spriter demo is promising. It could be really fun to play around and be creative with its game maker assets. The demo should do its best to sway me over. Yeah, I'm not impressed with Hullbreach Studios output so far, Defense Dome in particular seems not my type of game.
Inside My Radio looks fun, but the price is a bit steep. Should be a high quality game, but is it? - maybe.
That SMART math game with the longest eShop title ever looks alright for 2,99 though. It mustn't be bad - maybe.
6180 the moon looks different (and cheap enough) and it seems to have some content along with some music so - maybe.
Getting Bravely Second and Mega man. Pokemon ranger wouldve been nice to have if it weren't on wii u and the gen 1 pokemon games just aren't interesting enough for me.
"6180 the moon" seems fairly interesting. I'll probably pick it up. Nice to see a wide variety this week for Europe.
Got my eshop card earlier today to put aside for Pokemon Yellow, so just that & a physical copy of Bravely Second:End Layer.
Then a nice two week break for my wallet til Stella Glow releases.
I say this every week, but I just wished NoA would not fall behind on vc releases namely N64 and NDS titles.
@Webby-sama Typical case of the grass is always greener on the other side. I have zero interest in Bravely Second and would sacrifice ten Bravely game cards to Satan to get my copy of Fates. Eh.
Did I miss the "nothing for me" negative posts even though in Europe this week seems to be packed?
@OorWullie I agree man
The closer to the end of Bravely Default I got, the less I liked it. Such a trudge! I will have to go back to it at some point, but It's all about Fates right now.
@ga3tr0n thats a common talking point and why they supposedly didn't do it in bravely 2nd. i'm playing bd myself at the minute i'm on the fire crystal...(again), been grinding up just to steam roll the rest of the game so i can move on to the bravely 2nd demo, then the full game yeah i pre-ordered the collectors edition also.
Sad to see that Bravely Second still has that SP drink micro-transaction. Never used it on the original, definitely won't use it here either.
I'll be getting Pokémon Red but probably not even attempting to start it while I have Bravely Second on the go. Still got Xenoblade X taking up most of my time and then Zelda a week after this...some juggling is required.
@Baker1000 i only use the free earned one in special cases aka that boss who spams death/doom screw that thing.
Pokemon yellow for me as a download this week as i ordered the special edition of Bravely second from Gamemania so i can't wait to put that figurine of Agnes to my collection or enjoy listing to the soundtrack cd
im us but anything pokemon for me pls.
comonz noa cut your crap out and give me all the pokemon content.
I pay with $ you love that don't you? could use some of that VC loving over here ya know?
@kenrulei Enjoy!
Why are Virtual Console games double price now?? Thank you, Nintendo!!
Shin Megami Tensei IV is currently discounted from €19.99 to €9.99 in the EU e-shop too.
Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars worth getting at that price ?
There something the week for everybody to enjoy
