With the Shovel Knight amiibo out in the wild, Yacht Club Games has cleared the path for other Nindies to contemplate their own amiibo figures. As the studio explained to us, once Nintendo gave the all clear the Nindie did the vast majority of the work; as the first company to do its own amiibo, it also worked out a process that simply didn't exist beforehand.
Why does that matter? As Image & Form explains in its latest video, it means that the picture is now clearer for how it's done. The latest video from the company talks about the prospects of a SteamWorld amiibo, and it is - ultimately - a possibility. It'll come down to resources, but the intent is certainly there for the future.
There's also an update on the fact that SteamWorld Heist has been nominated for the prestigious SXSW Mobile Game of the Year. It's the only 3DS game on the list and it's up to a public vote, so if you want to show your support head over to this voting page.
Check out the video below and let us know whether you'd like a SteamWorld amiibo.

I don't think I would buy an amiibo for SteamWorld games unless the bonus was something amazing.....I have no interest in Shovel Knight eother.....but it's cool they have the option of doing it. Maybe it will allow you to use Rusty as one of your space pirates in Heist?
What a ridiculous question. OF COURSE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE STEAMWORLD AMIIBO!!!! (Rusty please)
Don't all the steam world games have a different protagonist? Perhaps they should make it an item that is universal to the series? Also what would it do? Not sure if I'd buy an amiibo with functionality in only one game. Now if it at least reads with the rest of the amiibo read only games then that is ok.
I'd like a Steamworld-Shovel Knight crossover game. That would be a better platform for the amiibo
I voted.
I also voted for the guy on the left in the "best adult harry potter" category.
No Amiibo. These toys are the worst thing that has happened to gaming.
Piper! She's awesome, I think she should be a reoccuring steambot in these games.
Voted for something else in the polls. Fallout Shelter, I think. That was fun for a while.
Hm...the only one that I can recognize right off the bat is Rusty, to be honest.
@zool Wait, do you mean toys-to-life figurines in general, or only amiibo?
Piper, please! C'mon, she's the main character! My 10-year-old daughter would love to add another strong female character to our Amiibo collection. An exclusive weapon or enhanced ability would be a nice add-on.
Amiibos and any thing connected to Nintendo
No amiibo. How about a physical game release instead?
Voted, my faith in humanity will be somewhat diminished if it doesn't win its category.
DEAR LORD MAKE IT HAPPEN! SteamWorld Dig is one of my all-time favorite games EVER.
Well, Rusty would be the best option. I can't remember if the series has any other mascot or some sort of universal element that would look fine as a figurine.
Rusty is the original I think so an Amiibo of Rusty would be brill but a range would be a lot tho.
I'd buy it.
There are 3 options as I see it. One is to make one Piper amiibo that works for various things in the game, like Chibi-Robo. The second option is to make an amiibo for each character in the game, which gives each character an upgrade. The last, and IMO best option, is to add new characters through amiibo. It would be neat to see the cast of SteamWorld Dig playable in Steamworld Heist through amiibo, as well as new characters. They should also offer a reduced-price DLC for these characters so that people who don't want a figure don't have to have it, and people can access the DLC even if the figures become rare.
