Brian Provinciano from Vblank Entertainment recently appeared on Electric Playground Live to demo and talk about his upcoming multi-platform release, Shakedown Hawaii.
One of the more interesting parts was when he was asked if it would be possible to run the "open-world comedy" on the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). This was his reply:
“To be honest, I would love after this game is done to go back and do something like that, I love tinkering with old hardware.”
Admittedly, he would be unable to port this game itself to a retro system, but would “love” to build a top-down action game on old school video game hardware.
In saying this, Provinciano did mention how he managed to get his previous release Retro City Rampage up and running on the Game Boy Advance:
“I actually did get RCR running on the Game Boy Advance and so that was really fun, I haven’t really unveiled it too much, but it was just a hobby… I’d say it’s 85 percent done, there are a few frame rate hiccups.”
When encouraged to actually release it, Provinciano said he would like to get permission to do it officially. It’s also worth pointing out how he worked on a NES prototype for Retro City Rampage way back in 2013.
To hear and see more about Provinciano’s latest Switch and 3DS-bound release, though, take a look at the below video which runs for over an hour:
Shakedown Hawaii is due out at some point this Spring. Tell us below if you're looking forward to playing it and if you've also experienced Vblank's previous release.

Man, I wish I has the programming skills of this guy.
I didn’t buy physical release of last one and regret it. This one I will do my best to get
That's neat he'll be making it for the GBA too, such talent!
Whenever it comes out, it’ll be a day 1 purchase for me. I got RCR for 3ds from a humble bundle and thought it was pretty neat.
Physical Switch release plz
I loved Retro City Rampage, and will be getting this one as soon as possible
I would love to have RCR on the GBA. I'd definitely purchase it if physical copies were made. I had been following the development of RCR ever since it was still a NES homebrew project called Grand Theftendo.
This game has been in development for so long. I’ll be surprised if it ever comes out, but it’ll be a day one for me (unless the long long long dev cycle is because it’s a mess)
This game looks like it has some real character.
looks great loved rcr and this looks much better!
He’s only announced physical versions for Sony because Vita carts are going out of production, and he’s one of those few still stuck on the Vita.
It’s unfortunate but that means I’ll be waiting to buy until Switch gets prioritized.
@Discipledoctor
If you watch the video you’ll know what’s taking so long.
He’s a perfectionist and he’s only one person. And the scope ended up being way larger than he was expecting. Hair animations that took 8 frames of animations in RCR takes over 400 in Shakedown Hawaii, just as an example.
This game seems to have been in development for a long time
Well most of us have been waiting the last year for the release.
....I wanna play that GBA version of RCR
I love the dedication of this guy and will gladly buy the physical Vita version.
Great dev!
The artwork on this game looks great.
I'm not a fan of RCR but I remember the devs for actually going "if you downloaded the WAD of RCR..." publically.
It's kind of sad that's what the Wii turned into but by the time of RCRs release it was already pretty much a dead platform, wiiware at least.
@LuciferOnReddit LOL Good point.
I really can't wait for this game. Retro City Rampage was so good.
Day one buy for me!
You know someone is in the right career field when he works all day on something and then goes home and works on the same kind of thing for a hobby!
I cannot wait for Shakedown Hawaii. Seems like it's been in development forever.
I'm really looking forward to this and I feel ill definitely double dip on the switch and 3ds. A triple dip is on the cards if it hits the vita too!
Love V-Blank although i didn't love it when they repeatedly lost my physical copies of RCR for three months. This game does look fantastic and i will definitely pick it up.
Damn, got my hopes up for a physical cart for this game
He also ported RCR to run on a 486 processor in DOS B) And there's an alpha version for Win 3.x.
the Shakedown Hawaii Facebook updates never tell me anything, and all I wanted for all these years was a release date! So, "some point this spring" it is then??
I would love to play the game on GBA! Just got the EZ-Flash Omega flashcart for my backlit GBA SP, and would love to play this on original hardware!
GBA release? Would TOTALLY buy it.
