We've seen plenty of cool retro mods over the years, but this latest effort from Game Boy Custom really stands out – mainly because it's fusing together a Game Boy Color with a Game Boy Advance and the internals of a Nintendo DS. Still with us? Good.
The Aussie modder has sent a proof-of-concept prototype to our friends at Retro Dodo, who have been putting it through its paces in the video above. Some things to note: it's not the final thing and is quite rough around the edges, and secondly, the unit developed a fault during the hands-on process which meant that Retro Dodo wasn't able to get much gameplay time with it.
Still, it's a pretty remarkable project and shows how modders are cooking up some interesting and unexpected creations using popular handheld systems. The only question is, what do you call this thing? The Game Boy DS? The Nintendo DS Boy? The Game DS Boy Color? Answers below...

I will never understand why people mod those frankensteins... It just destroys the whole thing.
This looks horrible! stop destroying perfectly fine Gameboys for this garbage!
That looks disgusting... I don't know why... What next, A 3DS GBA mashup?
Wait- I'm not surprised if that's gonna happen next.
That's just a Nintendo DS with extra steps
Looks more like a GBC and GBA SP mashup IMO.
It's a neat project for a hobbyist but I don't see much point otherwise.
What an abomination lol. It’s like combining the top half of a deer with the bottom half of a shark. Deershark. Must be nice to be able to make whatever handheld you want though.
this thing is the same as me: an abomination
It makes more sense to just make a DS from a GBA SP with only needs two extra buttons.
I go back and forth on whether this creation is cursed or blursed, but I'm heavily leaning towards cursed. Especially if it uses original parts.
You all know that they make reproduction shells right? So they probably only used a DS for parts. I'm not 100% sure since I haven't watched the video yet.
While there are some mods out there that I don't understand (Retro Future's LongBoy for example), this one looks pretty cool. I wonder if the rest of you think the portable Wii and PS2 out there are "abominations" too.
@71nk0 They probably needed more room for the boards than a SP could provide.
I love Gameboy modding but I've always hated these kinds of mods. This one looks better than most - at least the colours match - but it's still a really ugly mismatch (GBA-style flip screen on a GBC shell).
I don't generally mind unnecessary mods but this seems so destructive - cobbling together parts from better systems to make something that neither looks nor feels (probably) as good as the original pieces.
At the very least, I hope the work was done well. This one does look neat - like they have taken some care with it.
But here's a similar mod (not from the same modder). It's a complete horror show inside:

Hey it's not the retro future this time. Looks like Elliot has some competition for making Gameboys with too many screens.
I can feel the wrist strain right now. GBC is uncomfortable enough without the extra weight at the top.
...the internals of a DS, but no working touch screen? What is this for?
DSBoy
Is what it should be called...
@jojobar I assume they do it with consoles who's outside is irreparable, but the insides still work.
